Storstrom Bridge Design

The contract for construction was awarded in February 2018 to the Italian Consortium led by Itinera S.p.A, comprising GLF and Condotte, and named SBJV, Storström Bridge Joint Venture.

The design proposal presented by SBJV, was conceived and developed by de Miranda Associati/DMA during the Tender Phase.

The construction award came from a one year competition with other four international consortiums with the method of the so called “Competitive Dialogue”, in which the competitors are called to prepare alternative designs and to discuss them with the client, in a multi-step dialogue in which all contract requirements are first prepared, then challenged and discussed, and at last agreed, before placing the bid.

This design is based on three main concepts: total prefabrication, that is of all structural elements; macro prefabrication, that is of very large elements; simple erection methods based on standard equipment, mainly in the disposability of JV.

The bridge carries two roadway lanes and two railway trucks, linking the island of Falster with the main island of Zealand. Its construction is managed by the Danish Road Directorate, Vejdirektoratet, together with the Railway Authority Banendanemark.

The new Storstrøm Bridge will be one of the few bridges, in the world to carry a two-track high-speed railway, a dual carriageway highway, and a combined footway and cycle path, on a single cross section.

The bridge includes a two spans central cable-stayed bridge, 320 m long, and two approach viaducts, with typical spans of 80 m, for a total length of 3832 m.

The height from sea of the main spans is 33 m. Horizontal loads up to around 79 MN have to be withstood, due to the due consideration of possible ship collision.
All structures are reinforced and prestressed concrete.

Deck structure is a monocellular box girder, with trapezoidal shape, internal trussed diaphragms, double level top slab.

The bridge design is carried on by De Miranda Associati/DMA, with the contribution of the firms Andermann for landworks, SGI for geotechnical aspects and formerly EKJ for environmental and safety aspects.

DMA has carried out the design of all bridge structures including Viaducts and Cable Stayed Bridge and specifically: the winning Tender Design in 2017, the Basic Design in 2018, and in 2019 to 2020 the Construction Methods and the Detailed Design of all prototypal elements , that is precast typical foundations, typical piers and girders, and the cast in place abutments, piers, foundations and girders, as well as the precast foundation of the main pylon.

Construction is in progress.
